Candidates at Dáil, Seanad, European and Presidential elections must give details of donations they received and their election expenses to the Standards Commission.

What is the Standards Commission’s role in an election?

After an election, the Commission reviews the information sent in by the candidates. We advise the Department of Finance on reimbursing elected candidates for eligible expenses and we publish summary reports on the elections.

What information is in the election reports?

The election reports give details of:

  • Donations received by unsuccessful candidates
  • Election spending by candidates and political parties
  • Reimbursement of candidates’ election expenses
  • “Other person”/third party activity at the election

The Commission may also raise concerns about the legislation, based on its experience overseeing the Acts.
