While there is no code of conduct for members of the wider public service, public servants must adhere to the Ethics Acts and to the Code of Practice for the Governance of State Bodies, which was published by the Department of Public Expenditure and Reform. The department is responsible for developing a code for the wider public service.

The Standards Commission also has guidelines for public servants.

Many public bodies and agencies have their own code of conduct or practice that workers must adhere to.

Contact your human resources unit to find out if there is a code in place.

There are also codes that apply to professional groups in the public service – for example, doctors, lawyers, teachers and engineers have codes of practice within their professions.
