Who does the code apply to?

The code applies to:

  • Members of Cabinet
  • The Attorney General, if they are a member of the Oireachtas
  • Chairman and deputy chairman of the Dáil and Seanad
  • Oireachtas committee chairpersons

What does the code cover?

The code sets out principles that you, as an office holder, must adhere to. You must respect the trust the public places in you, and apply the highest ethical standards when carrying out your work.

You must take personal responsibility for your actions, promote the common good and be fair and impartial. You are also expected to be conscientious and prudent with your office resources.

The code also refers to other legislation and regulations that relate to office holders.
