The Code of Conduct for Councillors sets out principles of behaviour that you, as an elected member of a local authority, must adhere to in the performance of your duties.

Who does the code apply to?

It applies to city and county councillors. There is a separate code of conduct for local authority employees.

What does it cover?

The code sets out how you must behave in office – in areas such as general conduct and behaviour, managing conflicts of interest, planning matters, accepting gifts and hospitality, personal dealings with the local authority, having regard for council resources, and maintaining satisfactory working relationships.

Where can I get advice on my obligations under the code?

Contact the Ethics Registrar of your local authority.
